Description
Built on the ruins of a 13th century monastery, this wonderful Venetian estate dates back to 1750 and is known as the most famous and romantic of all the Corfiot Grand Estates – a true jewel in the crown. Until the end of the 19th century, olives were cultivated on the land and until the end of 2nd world war, the area enjoyed a feudal system - inhabitants of the farms dotted around the estate all paid allegiance to the Lord of the Manor.
Set within a plot of 100,000 sqm the whole estate is an outstanding area of natural beauty with wonderful forests, olive groves, cypresses and botanical gardens. The original owners had imported Magnolia trees, orange blossom and numerous exotic plans from the Far East. There is a network of private, ancient roads within the estate and privacy, peace and tranquility are foremost - the property itself is 400 metres from the main gate and reached via the private roads. There are wonderful lawns, paved courtyards and patio areas, paved walk ways, original stone walls, steps and archways throughout. A true paradise.
This superb property is a wonderful piece of Venetian architecture, with a rusty pink Venetian façade, roman tiled roof and numerous outbuildings which are all classified as historical monuments. The main house is 1,740 sqm in size. The exterior has been completely renovated with its interior, including a newly created pool, being 70% complete. The renovations are have been beautifully executed, with immense attention to detail to the past, retaining its charm and character yet also incorporating all modern comforts.
The outbuildings, as mentioned before, are all classified as historical monuments and include: a guest house of 255 sqm, an olive press of 540 sqm and store room of 40 sqm. These all require renovation.
This very private unique hideaway seems a world away and yet is conveniently located - just 9 km from Corfu town and a short drive to Gouvia marina with easy access to both the east and west coast beaches.
